Why is the movie industry not yet global?

In a world of globalization it is very amazing to me that in many ways the movie industry is one thing that is not yet as global as it could be. Yes, many movies made in America are released in countries all over the world. Many movies made in the United Kingdom do see the light of day in America (the most famous of course being the ‘Harry Potter’ series). As of late there has been the newest phenomenon of ‘Bollywood’ which is the Indian version of ‘Hollywood’. I am unsure of any specific Bollywood movies that saw a massive American release, but I do at least know that Bollywood actors have been in movies that were a hit in America (Anupam Kher in Bend it Like Beckham).

Beyond all of that though it’s amazing that for a British movie to come to America some movie studio within America has to buy distribution rights to show the movie in the United States. While most people will look past this fact, I don’t.

DOA: Dead or AliveTake DOA: Dead or Alive. It was filmed in Australia. During filming and even after I saw trailers for it on the Internet. I have always been a fan of the Dead or Alive video game series far more than Mortal Kombat. So, I was excited for a movie based on the video game series. This movie was never released in the united states or at least not on a wide basis (and it took over 9 months). Thankfully in the case of this movie I was able to buy it on DVD recently (on the Dimension Extreme! label, not generally used for normal movies).

AtonementThen, there is Atonement which is Keira Knightley’s latest movie which premiered in the United Kingdom on September 7th, yet is not scheduled to be in a United States theater until December 7th, 2007. The release in the United States is listed as ‘limited’ as well. Why? Has Keira Knightley not proved herself in America yet? Do they think that Americans don’t want to see a movie about life in the United Kingdom? In a world of globalization and the American success of ‘Pirates of the Caribbean‘ I doubt and hope that the answer to any of those questions is No.

Shutterfly, for pictures

It’s strange to think that the 1 hour photo places are almost a forgotten relic of the past. With nearly everyone except for professional photographers reverting to digital cameras now, the idea of taking in film to be developed is something we no longer do.

or is it?

Digital Cameras are great. I have one, 2 if you count my phones 2 mega pixel camera. However, the biggest flaw with digital cameras is the inability to get hard copies, non-digital versions of your photographs. A consumer level printer capable of printing good quality photographs is no the cheapest thing in the world and these ‘kiosks’ we see in stores usually make you pay by the picture.

Shutterfly
Enter Shutterfly. It’s an online store for an online world where you can upload your pictures and order large packages of printed pictures to be sent to you in the mail. The great thing about Shutterfly too is that like any online store there are always shutterfly coupons available. This means that you can often get several pictures free with an order, or get a bundle for dramatically cheaper than ever before. Shutterfly allows you to get hard copies of your pictures without ever leaving your home or having to decide which printer is right for you. It’s really a great thing for all digital camera owners, which is pretty much everybody these days.

I just broke 6,000 spam messages

Spam BoyI don’t know if this is good or bad. Certainly receiving SPAM means that your website is out there and able to be found by the SPAMbots which one could consider a good thing. However the fact that I’ve only gotten 1,131 legitimate comments (and many of those are in fact me) makes me think that having had this much spam and so little actual comments a bit disturbing.

What do you all think? Is 6,000 a reasonable number at this point? How much SPAM has your blog gotten?

apexad.net/wallpaper goes NextGEN

I have changed my wallpaper page to use the NextGEN Gallery plugin. It’s not as simple as the Lazy-K gallery was and thus I am able to better display and manage my wallpapers. It adds lots of cool features for me, the one uploading wallpaper. As an example, I can use it to call up Jessica Alba wallpapers for you:

[tags=jessica alba]
or maybe Maria Sharapova: [singlepic=39,150]

Clicking on the above images or by actually going to my wallpaper page you will also notice it is fully web 2.0′ifed for the user (you). It uses javascript and even flash to make browsing through wallpaper (or any images) really easy.

Please experiment with it, let me know what you think of it.
