Always be careful when upgrading
Depending on when you are reading this you’ll see that I’ve lost my theme (there’s a chance I have a backup or can hack it all back up). Basically, there is 3 things at play here. Firstly, all the wordpress files are actually in the /blog/ subdirectory. Secondly, I install wordpress via SVN because it’s just so damn easy. Thirdly, I upgraded to Wordpress 2.5 today.
The problem was that it wasn’t originally like that at all. So, I still had some wordpress files in my main directory and I also had an svn repository checked out to my main directory that I’ve accidentally updated before. I tried to fix all that today and was in the wrong directory, and did a ‘rm -rf’ and everything was gone!
That being said, Wordpress 2.5 seems really nice, but I just ask you all to be careful!
update: Don’t think I have a backup. I updated the images on the front page but the rest are gone forever. How sad! I think I’ll stick with the default classic theme for awhile and just pretend like nothing happened.
update 2: I decided to have a little style and selected the Stardust theme. I’ll use this one.
Some quick updates
I added _ (underscores) to the Keira Knightley and Keeley Hazell folders containing dual monitor wallpaper so that the directory names are better suited for urls. I hate seeing those %20 symbols in my urls.
I fixed the CSS slightly for the background of the site/theme. Thanks to Ryan and Safari 3 for pointing out it was broken.
I have upgraded to Wordpress 2.3.1
I expanded my sitemap a bit, if you know how, check it out. (hint: search for ‘lazy-k’);
Rebuilding my tags
I got frustrated with how wordpress 2.3 screwed up some of my tags in the conversion so I decided to completely nuke all my tags and categories. I am now going post by post to rebuild it all. I will make an update to this post when I am done.
Update at 2:13pm: I’m not done yet, but by doing some selective rebuilding and not just going through my posts 1 by 1 (although I have done some of that as well) my Tag Cloud is looking pretty good.
Update at 3:29pm: I continued to update posts. Mostly I was trying to fill up my slightly different categories a little more and I think I have done that decently now as well. I realize I probably still have a lot of posts sitting in Uncategorized with no tags, but I think all the important ones are fine.
Separate Trackbacks and Comments in Wordpress
Recently, my friend Ryan made a post about separating comment in trackbacks. He also suggested to me that I implement it on my own site. I did not, because I had not done any trackbacks within my posts, or at least none that I noticed. However, that all changed with my new-found-time-without-eve post, so I’ve just implemented this little fix. Just like Ryan, I used the easy tutorial located at Binary Moon. I suggest this for anyone who finds the trackbacks showing up as comments to be annoying.
Awesome Google Analytics plugin for wordpress
I just found this awesome new Google Analytics plugin for wordpress. Just like the previous plugin I was using it inserts the Google Analytics javascript in all your pages. However, something cool is that you can turn off the inserting of the Google Analytics code if your logged in as an administrator. It also has Feedburner stats!
Beyond that though, this plugin adds something more. It puts a lot of the Google Analytics statistics into a Reports tab. Here is a screenshot of the reports tab:
